Lavenham was once one of the wealthiest town in Britain on the back of the prosperous cloth trade. Lavenham’s wealthy wool merchants built the grand wooden framed houses you see preserved around the village today, they were the equivalent of medieval stately homes. It is considered to be one of Britain’s best preserved medieval villages and is a picturesque destination to visit, with much history steeped within the town’s streets.
The Guildhall in the heart of the town is run by The National Trust and is well worth a visit as well as St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church, Grade I listed, a fine example of Late Perpendicular Gothic architecture.
The world famous nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star was authored in Lavenham by resident Jane Taylor (1783-1824).
